Social Issues and Controversies, with a dash of Green

One of the most well known social issue Nike has had with the public is their use of sweatshops for their apparel manufacturing.

A sweatshop is a working environment considered by people to be dangerous and difficult. Pay is extremely low and conditions are typically extreme and harsh for employees to sustain.


As shown, the use of sweat shops by Nike gained national attention and outcry for the company to cease work in Indonesia, China, and Vietnam. Nike received the bulk of their sweat shop criticism in the 1990's with the company finally taking responsibility and owning up to their mistakes. Nike is one of the few shoe companies to come forth and admit their use of sweat shops and have since created task forces to monitor and score production shops. 


Nike has spent over $10 million dollars adhering to stricter fire safe conditions, air quality, wages, and overtime limits 


Nike has since redeemed itself by having "one of the most sought after factories to work at in third world countries"


Nike is known for changing their production methods to better suit the environment.

I believe Nike has done a considerable amount to keep the name and image of Nike away from it's past use of sweat shops and use of toxic chemicals to a more environmentally friendly and humane company.
Nike's entire separate web site for corporate responsibility shows their efforts in making the company green and environmentally friendly with support from their CEO's.
