Future Innovations

Basketball star LeBron James is currently featured as the new face for Nike

Nike unveiled future business plans in May about where Nike will be in the coming years.

-Nike intends to grow its business from $19.2 billion to $27 billion by 2015
-Nike will target the emerging global middle class, leverage itself with digital media (NikeID) and create better in-store retail experiences.
-One of Nike's most popular merges with technology is the Nike + iPod
A computer chip is placed in the shoe that connects to the iPod (nano) and syncs with running times, play lists, and mile counts.

Nike's true obstacles of success
-Recovering from the "anti Nike" campaigns from the use of sweat shops
-Bringing back the days of being a "hip" brand with the popularity of the Air Jordan and domination in the sports apparel industry.
-Keeping contracts with major college universities and athletic teams (Ohio State, Alabama, Florida to name a few)

I believe Nike should continue its goal to make its brand more personable and user friendly.
Visitors of Nike.com can visit blogs from athletes or everyday runners who discuss their Nike products, running techniques, and share tips and advice between runners.

Social Issues and Controversies, with a dash of Green

One of the most well known social issue Nike has had with the public is their use of sweatshops for their apparel manufacturing.

A sweatshop is a working environment considered by people to be dangerous and difficult. Pay is extremely low and conditions are typically extreme and harsh for employees to sustain.

As shown, the use of sweat shops by Nike gained national attention and outcry for the company to cease work in Indonesia, China, and Vietnam. Nike received the bulk of their sweat shop criticism in the 1990's with the company finally taking responsibility and owning up to their mistakes. Nike is one of the few shoe companies to come forth and admit their use of sweat shops and have since created task forces to monitor and score production shops.

Nike has spent over $10 million dollars adhering to stricter fire safe conditions, air quality, wages, and overtime limits

Nike has since redeemed itself by having "one of the most sought after factories to work at in third world countries"

Nike is known for changing their production methods to better suit the environment.

Above is a link that directs to the video message and written letter from Nike CEO Mark Parker

He explains Nike's part in working with the changing environment and making products suited to use better resources and create less waste.

The Nike "Trash Talk"

-Basketball shoe made from all recycled Nike products stitched together
-Environmentally friendly rubber that reduces toxic chemicals and "grind", when chemicals from the shoe are worn into roads and pavements from runners.
-Used by the Phoenix Suns

I believe Nike has done a considerable amount to keep the name and image of Nike away from it's past use of sweat shops and use of toxic chemicals to a more environmentally friendly and humane company.
Nike's entire separate web site for corporate responsibility shows their efforts in making the company green and environmentally friendly with support from their CEO's.

Finance$

With a big company like Nike, it is bound to hit some high and low points with its revenues.

In 1997, Nike hit a "financial wall" according to Chief Financial Officer Dan Blair.

From 97 to 2000, Nike had an inventory overhang, needed a reformatting of their management, and a better appeal to their customer base.

"We decided to engineer the company to create more consistency, because one of the things that held us back from out validation standpoint was our ability to generate bottom line growth, returns on capital, and being inconsistent," Nike co-founder Phil Knight

As part of the new marketing plan for Nike, 1997 was also the year that the Air Jordan became a sub-brand of Nike. The Nike Air Jordans became a famous shoe that was part created by the Chicago Bulls basketball star Michael Jordan

The Air Jordans have been the best selling basketball shoe since it's creation in 1985. The Air Jordan had been branded a "Nike" shoe from then until 1997, and is now considered a "Jordan Brand" product. The shoes are only affiliated with Nike for address and insurance purposes.

Yahoo Finance shows Nike's earnings and numbers as of May 2010:
Total Revenue: $19,014,000
Gross Profit: $8,800,400
Operating Income or Loss: $2,474,000
Net Income Applicable to Common Shares: $1,906,7000

Nike: "The Goddess of Victory"

This blog is to inform and reveal the company of Nike, and what goes on behind its corporate doors.
You see the swoosh, and what does it make you think of?

Nike Headquarters is located in Beaverton, Oregon

Nike, the number one manufacturer of footwear and apparel, has become a household name on the same level as worldwide companies such as Sony and McDonalds. Nike was founded in 1964 by track coaches and runners Bill Bowerman and Philip Knight as Blue Ribbon Sports, later becoming Nike in 1978. The name Nike was chosen in reference to the greek goddess of victory.

Nike, Inc is all about diversity, individuality, and staying active. Nike makes athletic apparel from infants to elderly and a wide variety of sports gear.
Further into the blog I will discuss the Nike company and Nike from a business view.
